What is Hold and Win in slots? Respins, cash collect and real figures

Hold and Win is a respin bonus: coin or money symbols lock in place, the other positions respin, and each new coin usually resets the respin count. Cash collect is a related feature in which one symbol collects the values on screen. Our database tracks 66 hold-and-win and 80 cash-collect slots.

Key takeaways

  1. 01Hold and Win (also Hold & Spin, Money Respin or Coin Respin) is a bonus in which coin symbols lock in place and the remaining positions respin, usually three times. A new coin typically resets the count; the round ends when respins run out or the grid fills.
  2. 02Cash collect is different: a collector symbol, such as the fisherman wild in Big Bass Bonanza, collects the values of all money symbols on screen.
  3. 03Neither feature raises RTP. Hold-and-win slots in our database have a median top RTP of 96.50%, against 96.37% for all slots, because Pragmatic Play and BGaming titles dominate the group.
  4. 04Hold-and-win slots publish lower maximum wins: a median of 5,000x the stake across 49 titles, against 8,820x for all slots with a figure.
  5. 0525 of the 66 hold-and-win slots list a jackpot feature, usually won by filling the grid.

Hold and Win is a slot bonus in which coin or money symbols lock in place while the other positions respin. Pragmatic Play’s Wolf Gold is a typical case: “If 6+ money symbols land in the base game, the Money Respin feature is triggered with three respins.” Only money symbols remain, and the count resets to three each time a new one lands. The round ends when the respins run out, and the values on the coins are paid. Our slot database tracks 66 slots with this kind of bonus, from seven studios.

How the bonus works

The names differ by studio: Hold & Spin (Pragmatic Play, Big Time Gaming), Money Respin (Pragmatic Play), Hold and Win or Coin Respin (BGaming) and Hold & Win (AvatarUX). The structure is usually the same:

  1. A trigger: a set number of coin symbols in one spin, or a special symbol.
  2. The coins lock in place; other positions are cleared.
  3. A small number of respins, usually three. Only coins, and sometimes special symbols, can land.
  4. A new coin locks and, in most games, resets or adds to the respin count.
  5. The round ends when the respins run out or every position is filled. The coin values are added up and paid.

Some studios add layers. In AvatarUX’s Pots of Power: Zeus, a pre-bonus wheel picks the number of spins, the grid size and the number of moving “Lightning Frames” from 27 combinations, and filling the grid applies a multiplier of x2, x3 or x4.

Cash collect, also called money collect, works differently. Money symbols with values land on the reels, and a collector symbol pays the total of every value on screen. In Pragmatic Play’s Big Bass Bonanza, wilds in free spins collect all visible money symbols, worth up to 2,000x in the bonus, and every fourth wild retriggers with 2x, then 3x, then 10x multipliers. Our database has 80 cash-collect slots, 69 of them from Pragmatic Play. Nine slots have both features; Floating Dragon Hold and Spin is one.

Hold and Win and RTP

RTP is the share of all stakes a slot is designed to return over a very large number of spins. The studio sets it for the whole game; the respin bonus is one part of that design and does not add to it. A slot whose bonus pays often must pay less elsewhere.

The median top RTP of our 66 hold-and-win slots is 96.50%, slightly above the 96.37% median for all slots. That reflects who makes them, not the feature: Pragmatic Play and BGaming, whose games list high figures, make 47 of the 66. AvatarUX’s hold-and-win games have a median of 96.10%, and they list three versions each; Pots of Power: Zeus shows “96.10% / 94.09% / 90.56%”. The casino picks which one it runs; see RTP versions explained.

Volatility, maximum wins and jackpots

Hold-and-win slots tend to cap their wins lower than other types. Across 49 titles that publish a maximum win, the median is 5,000x the stake, against 8,820x for all slots with a figure; the highest is 20,000x. Cash-collect slots have the same 5,000x median across 74 titles.

Jackpots are common: 25 of the 66 list a jackpot feature, usually fixed tiers such as Mini, Major and Mega won inside the respin round. A fixed jackpot is part of the RTP like any other prize. Our guide to jackpot slots and RTP covers how they compare.

Few studios label volatility for these games: 22 of the 66 carry a label, of which 9 are very high, 8 high, 4 medium-high and 1 medium.

Method

A slot counts as hold and win when its studio game page, as recorded in our database, describes a respin bonus with locking coin or money symbols under any of the names above. It counts as cash collect when the page names a money-collect or cash-collect feature. “Top RTP” is the highest version the studio lists; volatility and maximum win are the studio’s own labels and figures. Database-wide counts cover all 1,207 slots we track; the slot tables list only those with a page here.

Filling the grid is rare by design, and no respin pattern can be predicted. Set a limit before you play and treat slots as paid entertainment. Questions

What is Hold and Win in slots?

A respin bonus. It starts when enough coin or money symbols land; those symbols lock in place, everything else is cleared, and the player gets a set number of respins, usually three. Each new coin locks too and, in many games, resets the respins to three. When the respins run out, the values on the coins are paid.

What happens if you fill the whole screen in Hold and Win?

Many games pay a top prize. Wolf Gold pays its Mega Jackpot of 1,000x when all 15 positions are filled, and Grand Buffalo Hold and Win needs all 48 positions filled for its Mega Jackpot, once unlocked.

Is Hold and Win the same as cash collect?

No. Hold and Win is a respin round with locked coins. Cash collect is a feature in which a collector symbol gathers the values of money symbols on screen, as the fisherman wild does in Big Bass Bonanza free spins. Some games have both.

Do Hold and Win slots have a better RTP?

Not because of the feature. The studio sets RTP for the whole game. Our 66 hold-and-win slots have a median top RTP of 96.50%, with AvatarUX titles at 96.10% and BGaming at 96.70%. Some, like Pots of Power: Zeus, list lower versions too.
