What does hit frequency mean in slots? Definition and real figures
Hit frequency is the share of spins that return any win, including wins smaller than the stake. In 117 slots that publish it, the median is 23.77%, or roughly one spin in four.
Key takeaways
- 01Hit frequency is the percentage of spins that return any win at all, including wins smaller than the stake. A 25% hit frequency means about one spin in four pays something.
- 02It is not RTP. RTP measures how much is returned on average; hit frequency measures how often something is returned.
- 03In our database, 117 slots publish hit frequency as a percentage. The median is 23.77% and the range is 8.29% to 40.47%.
- 04Slots with nearly identical RTP can differ widely: Deadwood R.I.P returns 96.09% with an 8.29% hit frequency; Mental returns 96.08% with 34.19%.
- 05Free-spins odds are a related figure: the median in our database is one trigger in 217 spins.
Hit frequency is the percentage of spins that return any win at all, including wins smaller than the stake. A slot with a 25% hit frequency pays something on about one spin in four, on average over many spins. It says nothing about the size of those wins. In our slot database, 117 slots publish hit frequency as a percentage, all from Nolimit City’s game pages. The median is 23.77%, and the figures range from 8.29% to 40.47%.
A hit is not the same as a profit
A “hit” counts any spin that returns a payout. Many of those payouts are smaller than the stake. On a 1.00 spin that returns 0.40, the spin counts as a hit, but the player is 0.60 down.
Great Britain’s Gambling Commission addresses this directly. Remote technical standard RTS 14F, in force since October 31, 2021, says a gambling system “must not celebrate a return which is less than or equal to the total stake gambled.” The Commission did not ban such returns, only the celebration of them.
To turn a percentage into “one in N spins”, divide 100 by it. A hit frequency of 8.29% is about one hit every 12.1 spins; 34.19% is about one every 2.9 spins.
How hit frequency differs from RTP and volatility
| Figure | What it measures |
|---|---|
| RTP | Average share of total stakes returned over a very large number of spins |
| Hit frequency | Share of spins that return any win, of any size |
| Volatility | How widely results spread around the average: few large wins or many small ones |
| Free-spins odds | Average number of spins per free-spins trigger |
RTP is about how much, hit frequency about how often. A slot can return 96% through frequent small wins or through rare large ones. Hit frequency is one clue to which. Volatility describes the overall spread. Studios publish it on different scales, so it is harder to compare across studios than hit frequency. See RTP versions explained for why one slot can carry several RTP figures.
What the data shows
All 117 slots with a percentage hit frequency in our database are Nolimit City titles. BGaming also publishes a “Hit Rate” figure, but its pages do not state the unit, so we keep those values out of this analysis.
| Hit frequency | Slots | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Below 15% | 4 | 3.4% |
| 15% to under 20% | 13 | 11.1% |
| 20% to under 25% | 47 | 40.2% |
| 25% to under 30% | 31 | 26.5% |
| 30% to under 35% | 19 | 16.2% |
| 35% or more | 3 | 2.6% |
The median is 23.77% and the middle half of slots fall between 20.71% and 28.04%. In other words, a typical slot in this group returns something on roughly one spin in four or five.
The RTPs of these slots are tightly bunched: all 117 fall between 95.91% and 96.75%, and 110 of them between 96.00% and 96.49%. Hit frequency, by contrast, varies almost fivefold. That makes them a clean illustration that hit frequency and RTP are independent figures.
Examples from studio game pages
| Slot | Hit frequency | Free spins, 1 in | RTP |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deadwood R.I.P | 8.29% | 243 | 96.09% |
| Tombstone R.I.P | 9.08% | 194 | 96.08% |
| Kill Em All | 16.74% | 273 | 96.06% |
| Tanked | 20.17% | 249 | 96.04% |
| Fire in the Hole 2 | 25.09% | 211 | 96.07% |
| Book of Shadows | 33.33% | 154 | 96.01% |
| Mental | 34.19% | 216 | 96.08% |
Deadwood R.I.P and Mental have RTPs 0.01 percentage points apart. Yet Deadwood R.I.P returns something on about one spin in 12, and Mental on about one in three. In Deadwood R.I.P, the same total return has to come from far fewer paying spins, so the average hit is larger and the gaps between hits are longer.
Free-spins odds: a related figure
Free-spins odds, written “1 in N”, give the average number of spins per free-spins trigger. 107 slots in our database publish this figure, all Nolimit City titles. The median is one trigger in 217 spins, and the middle half runs from one in 196 to one in 252.
The two figures answer different questions. Hit frequency counts every paying spin, including small line wins. Free-spins odds count only the bonus trigger. Fire in the Hole 2 has a 25.09% hit frequency but needs 211 spins on average to trigger free spins. Buying the feature skips that wait at a fixed price; our guide to bonus-buy RTP shows how those purchases compare.
Using hit frequency
- Treat it as a long-run average. At a 30% hit frequency, any given run of ten spins has about a 2.8% chance of paying nothing at all.
- Do not read it as a win rate. Many hits return less than the stake.
- Compare slots at similar RTP: a lower hit frequency means fewer, usually larger, wins.
- Check the source. Studios that publish the figure do so on their own game pages; our slot pages link to them. Not every studio publishes it, and see which studios publish RTP for coverage.
Questions
What does hit frequency mean in slots?
It is the percentage of spins that return any win, including wins smaller than the stake. A 20% hit frequency means that, on average, one spin in five returns something.
What is a good hit frequency?
There is no good or bad value. In 117 slots that publish it in our database, the median is 23.77% and the middle half runs from 20.71% to 28.04%. A lower figure means fewer, usually larger, wins at a similar RTP.
Is hit frequency the same as RTP?
No. RTP is the average share of stakes returned over many plays. Hit frequency is how often a spin returns anything. Two slots with a 96% RTP can have hit frequencies of 8% and 34%.
Does a hit mean I won money?
Not necessarily. A hit can return less than the stake, so the spin is still a net loss.
